About Us

Who we are...

The Aerospace Medical Association (AsMA) is organized exclusively for charitable, educational, and scientific purposes. It is the largest, most representative professional membership organization in the fields of aerospace medicine and human performance. AsMA is an umbrella group providing a forum for many different disciplines to come together and share their expertise to benefit all persons involved in air and space travel. The Association has provided its expertise to a multitude of Federal and international agencies on a broad range of issues, including aviation and space medical standards, the aging pilot, and the physiological stresses of flight. AsMA's membership includes aerospace medicine specialists, flight nurses, physiologists, psychologists, human factors specialists, physician assistants, and researchers in this field. Most are with industry, civil aviation regulatory agencies, departments of defense and military services, airlines, space programs, and universities.

The Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) was formed in 1967 and is a non-profit medical association serving more than 2,000 members from nearly 70 countries. The UHMS is recognized as the specialty society that represents the science and medicine of undersea, hyperbaric, and wound medicine worldwide. It is the primary source of information on UHM, including peer reviewed, scientific papers in its Journal of Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine, symposia, standards, guidelines, and position statements relating to the safe and efficacious practice of hyperbaric medicine. The UHMS provides subspecialty hyperbaric facility accreditation globally, and it is one of only four medical associations with a comparative agreement with The Joint Commission. UHMS Committees are active throughout organized medicine and interface with payors, regulators and other authorities that have jurisdiction.

The primary objective of the joint Aerospace Medical Association and Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Annual Scientific Meeting is to share and disseminate scientific information across the pressure spectrum from sea to air to space. The meeting content is designed from prior evaluations, expert opinions, periodic surveys, and accepted abstracts. The joint meeting provides the latest results in sessions designed for aerospace, undersea, and hyperbaric medicine professionals under ONE roof. The scientific program will benefit physicians, academics, residents, medical and graduate students, and advanced undergraduates interested in aerospace, undersea, and hyperbaric medicine. Professional development and the other core competencies, as outlined by the American Board of Preventive Medicine and the American Board of Emergency Medicine, will be highlighted throughout the meeting. Continuing education credits are available for participants. The AsMA and UHMS are international in both membership and scope of interest, providing opportunities to connect and exchange ideas with some of the world’s foremost medical specialists and internationally renowned scientists in the fields of Aerospace and Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine and Human Performance. If you are interested in the multi-disciplinary approach to working with humans along the full pressure continuum and challenging environments, whether as a physician, physiologist, researcher, engineer, technician, nurse, student, or pilot. You should be one of us!

Aerospace, Undersea, and Hyperbaric medicine are truly multi-disciplinary and international. Our Annual Scientific Meeting presentations come from diverse experts who will enhance the world’s knowledge and understanding of the current challenges in Aerospace, Undersea, and Hyperbaric Medicine and demonstrate an impact on improving the health, safety, and human performance of those involved in aviation, space, clinical hyperbaric medicine, undersea and extreme environments. Our Annual Scientific Meeting presents an opportunity to learn about the work of our colleagues worldwide and share the knowledge and wisdom we gain in our day-to-day work and practice.
